Mexico Insurance FAQs
Buying insurance for your Mexican travels doesn’t have to be difficult. To ease the process, we’ve answered the most frequently asked questions below.
By providing only A+ rated underwriters, National General Insurance connects you with reliable, financially-stable Mexican insurers. Every policy includes legal assistance and roadside assistance. We have the flexibility to offer short and long terms for basic liability as well as options for collision, theft and additional coverages. Insuring your vehicle for use in Mexico is like insuring your car or RV in the U.S. – the coverages you need will depend on how you plan to use your vehicle while traveling in Mexico. From small to large issues, National General Insurance has you well covered in Mexico!
If you visit Mexico frequently, our six-month and annual-policy term options could provide you with enormous savings! Also, our policies have the option to cover all Mexico territories, or you can purchase a discounted policy for just the states of Baja and Sonora. So staying only in this tourist friendly area could save you a few dollars, as well!
We offer two deductible options that apply to coverage for theft of or damage to your vehicle. We recommend a fixed deductible to save you money in the event of a claim. The fixed amount varies with each Mexican insurer, but you can usually expect $500-$1000 maximum deductible. All of our Extended Coverage options automatically include this money saving feature! Our Liability Only and Standard Coverage options will give you the choice of “Fixed Deductibles” or the “Percentage” deductible. If you choose to insure your vehicle using the percentage option, more often than not, it saves you a dollar or two on your premium costs today, but will cost you more later in the event of an accident. The deductibles are 2% of the vehicle market value for collision and 5% of the vehicle market value for theft. It’s important to point out, however, that claims are subject to a minimum dollar amount, which varies with each Mexican Insurer and the type of vehicle you own.
When you purchase insurance from us, we e-mail you your Mexico insurance policy, as well as your Username and Password. With 24/7 online access, you can download and reprint your policy at any time.
If you are traveling and decide to stay in Mexico longer than you originally planned, you can extend your insurance policy. All you need to do is log in here and all your vehicle information will be saved. You will just need to enter the new term dates and provide payment.
Purchasing a policy requires a one-time payment with a debit or credit card for the term length of your choice. At the end of your policy term, it will merely expire; there are NO automatic renewals. For your safety, we do not save your payment information. If you purchased a six-month or annual policy, we will send you a reminder email one month before your policy expires and have all your vehicle information saved and ready to go. You can make your renewal payment online anytime or with us over the phone by calling 1-866-575-2877.
